Despite the amazing and unexpected joys of wandering off the beaten path, there are some precautions one must take. Often, journeys in beautiful and remote areas bring us in contact with mosquitos that carry diseases such as yellow fever and malaria.
Before traveling, notify your medical providers of the locations you will be visiting. They may be able to, or refer you to an infectious disease clinic who can, provide you with vaccines, preventive medication, or give you other suggestions on how to limit your exposure to diseases in your destination.
Here are a couple of helpful websites that can tell you if yellow fever or malaria is a concern where you are traveling:
NHS: Fitfortravel: https://www.fitfortravel.nhs.uk/advice/disease-prevention-advice/yellow-fever/yellow-fever-risk-areas
CDC: Yellow Fever Vaccine and Malaria Prevention Information, by Country: https://www.cdc.gov/yellow-book/hcp/preparing-international-travelers/yellow-fever-vaccine-and-malaria-prevention-information-by-country.html
Of course, the most common way to prevent mosquito bites is by using insect and mosquito repellent, whether a spray, patch, or bracelet. However, when the repellent doesn’t stop the mosquitos from biting, preventing diseases by other means becomes necessary for optimal health.
